چکیده

Can J Surg, Vol. 52, No. 1, February 2009 59 M esothelioma is a rapidly progressing, asbestos-related tumour. This tumour was once rare and is now showing an increasing incidence worldwide following the vast mining of asbestos, which peaked in the 1970s. Presently, although asbestos-related activities have been curtailed in most countries, the enormous historical production and use of asbestos in the form of various building materials and commercial products have resulted in millions of people being exposed to asbestos and a proportion of them now having asbestos-related diseases. In Canada, mining and exporting asbestos to developing countries is still ongoing. The diagnosis of mesothelioma occurs in the fourth to sixth decade of life. There is a preponderance toward the male sex. This is thought to be caused by occupational exposure to asbestos. In Canada, there is a rising trend in the number of men receiving diagnoses of mesothelioma each year. In 2003, there were 344 diagnoses recorded, a marked increase from 153 diagnoses recorded Correspondence to: Professor D.L. Current Concepts in the Diagnosis and Management of Patients With Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPM) is a malignancy that arises from the mesothelial lining of the abdominal cavity and largely manifests as a diffuse process. There are two hallmark features of MPM. First, MPM may progress and present itself diversely among patients. While some patients may endure a quick tumor progression that is refractory to seemingly successful initial therapeutic cyto...

Diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma: systematic review of clinical management and biological research.

Diffuse malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (DMPM) is an uncommon and locally aggressive tumor with poor prognosis. Currently, no standard therapy is available. The biology of this disease is still poorly understood. We performed a systematic search of relevant studies on clinical management and biological research of DMPM. Trials were selected using a predetermined protocol. The current evidence...

Evolution of management in peritoneal surface malignancies.

Management of peritoneal surface malignancies has gradually evolved by the introduction of cytoreductive surgery in combination with intraperitoneal chemotherapy applications. Recently, peritoneal metastases of intraabdominal solid organ tumors and primary peritoneal malignancies such as peritoneal mesothelioma are being treated with this new approach. Selection criteria are important to reduce...

It is the second most common site for mesothelioma development and accounts for 10-20% of all mesotheliomas diagnosed in the United States. A meeting sponsored by the NIH Office of Rare Diseases was held in Bethesda, Maryland on September 13 and 14, 2004. The objective o...

Personalized Oncogenomics: Clinical Experience with Malignant Peritoneal Mesothelioma Using Whole Genome Sequencing

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a rare and sometimes lethal malignancy that presents a clinical challenge for both diagnosis and management. Recent studies have led to a better understanding of the molecular biology of peritoneal mesothelioma. Translation of the emerging data into better treatments and outcome is needed. From two patients with peritoneal mesothelioma, we derived whole genome sequenc...
